Mechanically dredging wastewater lagoons and ponds is an expensive process that stirs up nutrients that are trapped in the anaerobic layer of sludge and puts them into the water column to fuel algae growth. Challenge
A rendering facility had a 1.6-hectare pond 1.8 m (6 feet) deep with about 1.2 to 1.5 m (4-5 feet) of sludge that is discharged every day from the wastewater treatment plant. This holding pond receives roughly 500 to 600 ppm of BOD, has a 7.8 pH, and 25 to 30 ppm of ammonia each day. They needed an economical way to reduce the sludge bod and odors. In addition, their pond downstream developed high TSS.
Solution
They began feeding 907 grams per day of VitaStim Summer Slam along with OxyPacs XL for 3 months then started Vitastim Polar to keep sludge at bay during the winter
Results
Within 3 months the sludge was reduced by about half throughout the entire lagoon. With the use of these products the facility biologically reduced sludge bod and odors in their main holding pond and reduced the TSS issue downstream this facility continues this program every 2 to 3 years.
